 Mental Health Skill-Building Service (MHSS)* addresses the needs of individuals who are experiencing difficulty functioning in their daily lives. Our qualified Mental Health Professionals provide rehabilitative services that seek to increase an individual’s overall stability in the least restrictive and appropriate environment.

Reimbursed by Medicaid, MHSS provides a multitude of interventions designed to help individuals live a more independent lifestyle by improving their overall daily functioning. We offer assistance with budgeting and financial skills, household management skills like healthy meal planning, food preparation and organizational skills, as well as effective communication skills and anger and stress management.

To qualify, an individual must demonstrate a clinical need for service due to mental health, behavioral, or emotional illness that results in significant impairments in daily functioning, and must meet the following criteria:

  • The consumer must have a qualifying mental health diagnosis (Psychotic disorder, major depressive disorder-recurrent, or bipolar disorder I or II).
  • The consumer must have the need for individualized training in acquiring basic living skills such as symptom management, adherence to psychiatric and medication treatment plans, development and appropriate use of social skills and personal support systems, personal hygiene, food preparation and money management.
  • The consumer must have a prior history of one of the following mental health treatments: psychiatric hospitalization, residential crisis stabilization, Intensive Community Treatment (ICT) or Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) services, placement in a psychiatric residential treatment facility (TRC Level C) or TDO evaluation as a result of decompensation related to serious mental illness.
  • The consumer must have had a prescription for anti-psychotic, mood stabilizing, or anti-depressant medications within the last 12 months.
