Bob has been leading HumanKind’s transformation, creating collaborations, building capacity and expanding services since 2003. He’s developed a culture of adaptive leadership focused on delivering excellent and relevant services that meet constantly changing human-service needs. He’s also guided strategic planning with board, staff, clients, alumni and external stakeholders. In 2010, Bob worked collaboratively to acquire and assimilate Family Alliance (another more than 100 year-old human servicing organization).

Experience: Before serving at HumanKind, Dendy served as President and CEO of Credential America, Market Manager of Hospice for HCA, Richmond, an Administrator of West End Orthopedic Clinic and as Mobile Operations Manager for HCA, Richmond.
Volunteer Leadership: LEAD Virginia Endowment Campaign Committee; Governor appointment to the Board of Virginia’s Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Chair since 2010-2013; Comfort Zone (Bereavement) Camp Charter Board Member, Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Bob is married with three sons and enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, traveling, biking, swimming and running.
Nelson Nava, Chief Financial Officer
As the Chief Financial Officer, Nelson is responsible for leadership, strategic planning, and oversight of the ongoing activities of administrative functions with particular emphasis in Finance. His primary responsibility includes financial and new opportunity analysis, business plan development, benchmarking, merger and acquisition due diligence, investment management, property/asset valuation and relationship development. Additional areas of responsibility include Accounting, IT and Maintenance departments.
Education: Nelson received his Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the Mason School of Business at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg VA. He also received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from The Bolivian Catholic University in La Paz, Bolivia.
Experience: Before serving at Humankind, Nelson worked for 10 years as a Director of Finance and IT and as a Director of Operations for Tienda Inc. in Virginia. He also worked for a year as a Data Analyst for Fannie Mae in Washington DC. And additionally he worked for 8 years as a Consulting Manager, IT Consultant and Financial Auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers in South America.
Nelson was born and raised in La Paz, Bolivia. Became a US Citizen in 2015 and has been married to his wife for over 22 years. Nelson has one son finishing college and a daughter finishing high school in 2017. He enjoys playing soccer, watching a good movie, reading a nice book, listening to music, all things tech related and traveling.
As Director of Communications and Promotions, Ashleigh oversees the marketing, promotions and branding of HumanKind as a whole. Through these efforts, she coordinates marketing for all of the programs to demonstrate need, tell a story, and show the impact the organization has in the community and beyond. In addition, she provides oversight to the Development Department and fundraising strategies for HumanKind.
Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts from James Madison University, Masters in Historic Preservation from Boise State University.
Experience: Prior to joining the HumanKind team, Ashleigh was the Director of Marketing at Amazement Square children’s museum and the Director of Marketing and Design for Neighborhood Housing Services in Boise, Idaho. She also served as the Marketing Coordinator and Interior Designer for Trout Architects/Chartered and the Lead Designer and Operations Manager for Founders Kitchen and Bath in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ashleigh is married with two small children, enjoys just being a mom, volunteering in the community, traveling, and being a sports fan with a serious focus on baseball, college basketball and football. Whenever free time becomes available again, reading and gardening may return.
Ryan joined HumanKind as a Clinical Specialist in the Community Supports Program in 2011, and is now responsible for the oversight and supervision of staff in the Counseling Center, Community Supports, and Therapeutic Foster Care programs.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Liberty University, 60 hr. Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University, Licensed as a Professional Counselor in the State of Virginia.
Experience: Prior to joining the HumanKind team, Ryan was the Program Manager/Counselor at a transitional housing facility for homeless and chemically dependent men. To meet licensure requirements in the state of Virginia, Ryan completed 4,000 residency hours while working as a Clinical Specialist in the Community Supports Program.
Ryan is married with two daughters and enjoys golf, ice hockey and exercising.
As Director of Quality & Grant Funded Services, Miriam oversees the gathering of both quantifiable and anecdotal data to demonstrate the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of the organization’s programs and departments. In addition, she provides oversight to the Early Childhood Development, Economic Empowerment, and Safe & Healthy Living focus areas, actively working with grantors and other collaborative partners to deliver quality services to those in need.
Education: Juris Doctor, The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law; Master of Public Policy and Management, The Ohio State University; Master of Clinical and Community Psychology, University of North Carolina – Charlotte; B.A. Psychology, University of Virginia.
Experience: Prior to joining the HumanKind team, Miriam was the grant writer and Director of the Counseling Center for the Family Alliance. She has also served as the Director of the Court Assessment Program in Columbus, Ohio. Past legal experience includes a clerkship with a federal magistrate judge and employment with a small firm specializing in business and corporate law.

Miriam has one daughter and one son. She enjoys traveling, reading, and cooking, but spends most of her time listening to little girl chatter and watching for baby developmental milestones.
Juliette provides leadership for Adult Services at HumanKind. Adult Services currently offers three types of residential support options for adults with intellectual disabilities: group homes, supervised living apartments and sponsored homes. These services are provided in Fredericksburg, Lexington, Lynchburg, South Hill, Stuarts Draft, and Zuni.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Public Administration, Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Virginia
Experience: Prior to HumanKind, Juliette worked as a Career Agent with KRA Corporation in Portsmouth, Virginia, as a Prevention Specialist & Case Manager with the Western Tidewater Community Services Board and as Director of the Army Community Service Center in Neubruecke, Germany.
Past Board Service: Youth Services Advisory Board, Healthy Families Advisory Board, Community Help in Progress (C.H.I.P.), the Substance Abuse Advisory Council and the American Youth Foundation (AYF). Juliette is married with two sons, two grandchildren and enjoys gardening, traveling and dancing.
